Being a kid then, I didn’t really remember all the other family intrigues that greeted Fuad upon his return. I remember instead the kampong scenes – him drifting on the rakit, main tarik upih, and the kenduri at the end. Oh. And of course, that scene when he rescued Dila from some junkies in a science lab and knocking over all those bottles in the process *cue: swoon, brave abang!*.
Interestingly, new perspectives emerged when watching it through adult eyes. I was amazed at how Noorkumalasari could walk around with such bouffant frizzy mane (among other fashion faux pas circa 1981) and chuckled at her and Ogy’s OTT acting, but that aside, the movie was an interesting sociocultural reflection of Malay society back then. The lives of the nouveau riche and their social parties and drinking juxtaposed with simple kampong life.
Love the soundtrack too.
Anyway, that movie made me a fan of Rahim Razali and the kind, menyembunyikan sejuta rahsia smile of his unlikely, reluctant hero persona. His subsequent movies like Anak Sarawak and Tsu-Feh Sofia were similarly reflective. And then suddenly he disappeared and then resurfacing again in Cinta (2006), tugging hearts as at dignified cikgu pencen with Alzheimer’s. He sure ages gracefully.
I was just thinking of the movie the other day, wondering if it’s on DVD or CD or something, so thank you for playing this Suria. Now if you could just play Anak Sarawak and Tsu-Feh Sofia again, I’ll be eternally grateful.
muahhaahahahahahahah.....! padan muka!
ReplyDeletebut i want the Abang 92 version...the one with yummy azhar sulaiman?
ya it spawned that not-bad 1992 version, and hahaha..ya it got me started on that crush on azhar sulaiman too. The Curse of The Abangs!
ReplyDeletewatched it last nite n i managed to stay glued to it, not that i had perceived it as boring or wat, but i tot aiyah wacthing it again macam boring kan.. but i was somehow spellbound by the dialogues n of coz how rahim razali managed to say 3 or 4 lines in 1 breath... that's so him...anyway.. it was a good show
ReplyDeleteI watched it too, when some guy gave something to a blind guy, backed by a beautiful landscape. In other words I only knew it was playing around 30 min before credits. Anybody TiVoed? Hehe.
ReplyDeletei missed watching it..asked my mom..and she said it was shown last nite..sigh..
ReplyDeleteDitto to all that you've said
ReplyDeletehe has that inimitable style right, sangat Lelaki Melayu Terakhir..haha
ReplyDeletehaiya...lambat setapak...

I LOVEEEE ABANG FUAD.
ReplyDeleteYes I am too in love with the movie and specially Rahim Razali...after that movie I make sure I watch any movies or dramas Mr RR acts. I love his voice, his aura...everything. Esplly the part when Ogy call...."Abang Fuad? Abg Fuad..." Even thot of naming my son Fuad when I watched that movie in the 80s. Sadly din catch the movie again last night. Tapi saya suka part Ogy marah Tarmini Siregar heheh..'...macam singa betina'.
Dengarlah lagu hatiku...simfoni rayuan kalbu...fav song!
Abang '92...hehe not as powerful as original Abg Fuad but yes the start of goo-gaa on Azhar Sulaiman...but he so short standing beside Deanna Yusoff. hehehe
*high five tina*
ReplyDeleteah..another Rahim Razali fan :) and 'aura', yesss that's the word to describe him. hard to find a Malay leading man now to match that aura of his eh? macam 'lelaki melayu terakhir' :P
dan saya setuju, memang sedap nama 'Fuad' tu. in this age of danish and rayyan, jarang kita dengar budak nama 'Fuad' sekarang eh? jadi kenapa Khair tak bernama Fuad? ridzham veto-ed the idea i suppose? :)
nama Khair tu pun saya yang pilih. cik ridzham not so particular really. saya tak jadi gunakan nama2 yg bermula dgn F, takut nanti anak2 ingat saya pilih kasih, beri nama sama abjad dengan mama nya.
ReplyDeletei'm a big fan of Rahim Razali. he have that calm n great cinematic presence on screen.
ReplyDeletei saw d movie last sunday..... a bit here n there but d thing tht popped in my mind was how 'orbit' d fashion was back then n how 'over d top' some of d actors were......as compared to rahim razali n tht yatim guy *sori....lupa nama dia dah! hehehe...*
Yah, this is one Rahim Razali classic. My friend said he had to switch the channel to wrestling so his mom wouldnt watch the tv and when she walked off he switched back to watch Abang. Sebab "tak macho" ah kalau bilang mak dia nak tengok. Lagi pon dia bukan nya selalu tengok suria channel! Kelakar ah .....
ReplyDeletei've always felt that this show was like watching theatre on film. I missed it on TV too, arggh...terus next day pegi youtube dengar lagu 'Simfoni Kasih'. Jadilah tu...hahahah
ReplyDeleteAbang is now in dvd. watched it at my dad's and reviewed it at my wordpress
