these past few days, i open the door and i'm greeted by this wondrous sight first thing when the sun rises. Like Ilhan says, "Look Mum, it's a wainbow!" two parallel rainbows, at that. for about 3 days in a row. beautiful, isn't it? it finally feels like autumn, with the wather a balmy 20-23degrees in the day with rain every other day.

now, about the title. Kak N called me the other. she got a call from singapore at 1am about her nephew passing away. she scrambled to get on the first available flight back to sg.
a quick intro to Kak N - she's married to an Aussie (who became a Muslim 3 years before meeting her), has 3 kids, and wears the tudung labuh (big hint here). she's been living in Perth for 10 years and naturally is a PR.
as usual she cruised through Perth Airport and reached singapore soil. now that's where the issues began. she was detained at the passport counter and brought to a room where she was asked ridiculous questions for about an hour.
"Are you married?
"How many kids do you have?"
"What does your husband work as?"
i would say these were the more sedate questions asked. she told me there were more ridiculously probing ones. and when she demanded to know why she was questioned like that, she was told it was because she has a common name. i know.....like "HUH?"
Kak N was getting really mad cos she had a funeral to go to, and there they were wasting her time for over an hour. the only answer they had for her was "We're just doing our job." standard civil service reply. the lady officer questioning her kept going in and out of the room, operating from some order from some higher being somewhere.
when they finally let her go, she asked if this will happen again the next time she comes to Singapore (her birthplace, she still holds the red passport and IC), they said they can't promise that.
and get this - this is not the first time it's happened to Kak N. the last time she came to singapore about 3 years ago with her whole family and her Aussie mother-in-law (a sweet old lady) to get them acquainted with her side of the family, they all got detained and subjected to about an hour of questioning - why were they there blah blah blah. her kids (Muhammad and Aiman were 6 and 3 that time) were tired and cranky and she was told to keep them quiet. that did it, of course, she went ballistic and kicked up a huge fuss. she felt so bad for her mother-in-law.
why eh? the 'common name' is a bodoh excuse. is it the tudung labuh? atau sebab dia kahwin mat salleh? but then again i don't think a chinese SPG kahwin mat salleh gets subjected to all these nonsense, right?
why eh?
Its the "kenapa mat saleh boleh sampai hati lepaskan drinking & whoring"
ReplyDeletebit thats mind boggling, coupled with the tudung ..whoa,potent!
Yesterday there was a letter on the forum page by a Sgp migrant to Melb. who said that much as this is a place he grew up he enjoys the finish work promtly at 5 and family time, living on landed property etc without the stress of being an efficient well oiled machine. He said that despite paying more in taxes and getting less efficient services compared to SGP, he said it was a better trade off because he is able to live like a human being and not a machine.
tell me about it..even the banks take a looong time to process anything, very annoying to a singaporean...:)
ReplyDeletehee..lets put it this way- we're just doing ur job.. cos they takda benda lain nak buat... who knows ader quota to meet? so 'we'r jsut doing our job' agian. lame but it could well...be the case n it's happening...
ReplyDeletealamak....mcm my story pulak waktu i balik frm australia....abt 16 yrs ago. kan dh nk kene tulis blog!! hehehe..... kalau i nk explain kat sini panjang ceritanya....takut kene bayar royalties kat u pulak!
ReplyDeleteme, hubby n my 2 daughters (1yr 3mths n 2 1/2 yrs old) kene tahan when we pass tru immigration here. d worst part was tht they released us but nt my youngest daughter. d dialogue was "u can come back on d next working day (we cm back on d evening of christmas eve!) n we will see hw it goes!!" boleh ke!!!??? r they too overzealous of work procedures tht they forgot abt being a human being??!!
i was hysterical....wht can a 1 yr old kid do tht can b a threat to d country or even anyone!? hw can u seperate such a young child frm her mum!? we r born n bred sporeans (except for d baby) but we felt like 2nd class citizen, d worst part of it all.... almost all d ppl tht handled our case were melayu n they were very, very rude!!
i read abt d guy frm melbourne tht wrote in d forum page n i hv to agree wth him.....i will never leave spore wth a guilty conscience!!!
when we 1st arrived in bali, we went to Makroh to shop.....makrohkan sells things mostly in bulk n we had 2 big trolleys of stuff to pay for.
ReplyDeletedhlah queue-up berejam....dh sampai kat depan, dia kerja mcm jln tepi pantai! punyalah darah up tengok dia buat keje.
i'm normally a very nice person but tht particular day i put on my most evil look n stare straight into her face.....ehhh, dia bole berbual dgn member dia kat another counter gelak2!!!
alamak, kalau kat sini mesti dh kene complain n sepatah kata donald trump (tapi indo version) "kamu di pecat!!" hehehehe......
that's nuts, kak mila...so did they detain your baby?
ReplyDeletei thought all these profiling stuff started post-9/11. didn't know we started way back.
hee hee hee...i guess us singaporeans bring our high expectations everywhere we go. the trick is to 'masuk kandang kambing mengembek, masuk kandang kerbau (ke lembu eh?) menguak' :)
ReplyDeletemy hubby followed them into d rm wth d baby. after a while my hubby was asked to sign an agreement not to bring d baby out of d hse until they settle d case.
ReplyDeleteu wld think it's bcoz of 9/11 but at tht tym i tk pakai tudung n i look very chinese....nanti i tulislah kat blog......u baca k!
alamak!! u tanya i!! siapa yg cikgu ni??!! hehehee......
ReplyDeleteit's really an eye opener when u live in another country......i'm nt talking abt visiting it as a tourist. u will see a very diff side of tht plc once u settle there.
bcoz of tht, i'm all d more disappointed to hv encountered tht kind of problem in 'efficient' spore.
oh so familiar well-oiled machine syndrom. just last year i came back to singapore with hubby from brisbane bringing some hajj cd and kena tahan this security officer-- quite an elderly malay man pulak tuh and being asked this and that about the content of the cd and we were like harlowwww... the cd cover says Hajj Made Easy, what you think that can corrupt the Singaporean minds ke???
ReplyDeleteAmran dgn selambe nya spoke in mat melayu lingo.. 'pakcik, takde gini lah.. ni CD untuk orang nak pergi haji. Pakcik kalau nak satu saya boleh bagi'... or something like that lah..muahahah muka pakcik cramp sey... terus kita lepas
Cake, if I begin with the lack of efficiency with the Indians, my made in singapore-but-made by indians blood will start boiling.
ReplyDeleteShahid says their service is if they are doing us customers a HUGE favor. .. very the slack one.
If they are not happy with you, (oh Lord only knows the trouble if you are Muslim in India), then forget it. You might as well be knocking your head on a wall...
alaah I tell you ah itu Tamil Tiger lagi seram & terror. They are like the Irish terrorists... just that they are very much..VERY VERY much active to their cause and most are emmigrants and are wealthy, educated elites. Dont know what it is with them lah eh, siii beh on about their cause.
ReplyDeleteBut Iguess it is more impressive if you "made the numbers" in profiling jobs these days, esp if you are Muslim, just "to show" that you are a "good worker" etc.
Oh in India, we always read news about attacks on MNCs/bourgeoisie by the Naxalites(ini terrorist communist).
In Kerala, one actor cowerd to threats and removed himself from endorsing Pepsi. The Commies made a big deal because the company was going to take over a kampungs natural water source from them.
So they all brought out their Commie gangster in them.
& this isnt last century news, this happened less than a year ago.
my point is... to malign Muslims today is ok becayse its just easier to paint all the drama ...
aiyah cake, isnt it obvious? they're MUSLIMS that's why. Those morons are "just doing their job" without using their God given brains cos they think "ala, just do only lah, no need to think. End of the month still get paid wat."
ReplyDeleteIts tough being a Muslim these days, especially if you are travelling.
quite sad that in NE we're telling the kids that SG treats everyone equally, 'regardless of race, language or religion'. but this still happens.
ReplyDeleteoh c'mon, we all know NE's a load of crap. i found it reall yhard to teach something i don't believe in. like i rather not teach anything than teach lies.
ReplyDeleteIt IS really sad - I remember all the times in my own homeland I was racistly treated by non-Muslim Singaporeans *hint:theSoCalledMajorityRace*. Every time I was wearing my madrasah school uniform, the apek bus would be really rude and if there is no one else in the bus stop who's flagging the bus, they would just ignore me and drive straight ahead. Really sad because I lived so far away from my school and have to get to the bus stop by 6am to make sure I get to school in time!
ReplyDeleteAnyway, sometimes, I do think it's better here in UK: at least kalau kena racial abuse pun, I can say it's because I am a foreigner here. But, I am adamant NOT to give up on my homeland....if semua orang kita cabut and give up on SG then the "majorityRace" lagi tepuk tangan - happy to see we leave. We should stay put and demand our rights as real citizens of the the country...kan I dah start my ceramah ni! :)
i pity kak n's plight. to elaborate on this issue,it'll be way too lengthy. to sum it up;all those bodohs are juz plain bodohs.
ReplyDeleteshameless...didnt expect something like this to happen in SG.
ReplyDeleteI was detained when going to US once, bcos they said I dont look like the picture in my passport.
The second time to US we were detained, bcos my son's name is similar to ...some terrorist agaknye. I mean, for goodness sake, he is only 5 then.
so true huda. which highlights the fact being detained and subjected to such nonsense in your own country's airport when you have no problem else where is even more humiliating and unbelievable.
ReplyDeleteand i've heard of the apek bas kurang ajar too...
let me guess maria, these happened at the singapore side?
ReplyDeleteit seems to me after a nice trip/long holiday overseas, changi airport- esp the immigration part - always provides a shocking welcome back home. very reality bites..."Oh. I'm back in Singapore."
aiyoy! sometimes they are so anal ahhh?
ReplyDeleteyes, yes.. sometimes i feel like running back into the plane. and hopefully it'll take off back to where i came from...
ReplyDeleteif you know you are possibly a target, then possible to avoid appearing like a target?
ReplyDeleteby taking off her hijab? it's not a niqaab or anything, just something longer than what you and i wear. and what abt with the feeble old MIL? how target-appearing is that?
ReplyDeleteno lah i mean, then dun wear that long kindda tudung you know? and stick with bright colours that reflect modern-ism, attract attention-ism, i don't know! just avoid being singled out for being obviously dressed in black/brown/grey long tudung and jubaah.
ReplyDeletehmmm
ReplyDeleteseriously?
ler..ksiannye kak N tuuuuu....btw, i love e rainbow....spore ni skarg hujan selalu,tapi rainbow nyer tak muncul2..rupanye dia pegi australia...hahahhah..hehehe.
ReplyDeleteNowadays they dun just target those wearing long jubah-in black/brown colours..personally, I dun see any point in compromising to anyone else's "standard" dress codes..
ReplyDeleteno lah i'm not saying you bend and conform. pakai long sleeves tshirt and proper tudung still observing your aurat right? just make it a non-black/brown/grey tudung and tshirt loh. : )
ReplyDeletem glad i read this entry...esp the thing at the last para...!!! After coming to US..i feel i was really one spoilt brat..back in spore. Eventho its been a few weeks...there is one thing i have learnt ...and tht is being patient. lol ! But i can't believe how ridiculous the airport officials were to yr fren Kak N..eventho i dont even understand wat tudung lebuh means..i know wats tudung.,,erm wats lebuh. lol !!! ARgh...always had probs with malay lang back in sch !!!
