check out this report from yesterday's The West Australian:
New study shows half of young chalkies want out
31st January 2007, 6:45 WST
Almost
half of new teachers in WA plan to leave the profession within five
years because of heavy workloads and badly behaved students, according
to a new survey.
An Australian Education Union study of 1299
teachers across Australia who had been teaching for between one and
three years found a quarter of them did not see themselves teaching in
five years.
Forty-three per cent of the 81 teachers
surveyed in WA planned to quit within five years, blaming behaviour
management, workload, class sizes and poor pay.
Nationwide, 40 per cent had changed professions to become teachers yet believed they would quit within 10 years.
About 80 per cent said they were not adequately trained to deal with parents or colleagues.
Nearly
39 per cent said they had no instruction or experience in classroom
behavioural management, while in WA and across Australia almost 70 per
cent of teachers had no training to deal with indigenous students.
AEU
president Pat Byrne said the growing level of discontent within the
education system would only compound the national teacher shortage.
the story's the same here, i guess. the first 2 paragraphs just about sum up the situation in sg too. yours truly truly enjoyed the first 3.5 years and then by the fifth year she got burnt out.
enjoying the break now :)
anyway, back to the papers. it can be disconcerting reading the Letters section of the papers sometimes. it's of course, not la-la and sterile like the ST's Forum page. so whenever there's some issue on islamic radicalism you get letters pouring in - some level-headed ones speaking up against the branding and stereotyping, some reeking of insularity and jingoism (along the lines of 'Finally Islam has shown its true colours to the people of our great nation'). it makes me wonder; in my daily dealings here, how many people i come into contact with belong to the first group, and how many belong to the second.
ilhan and i went over to the Morley family centre and checked out the playgroup facility. the play area's huge, much bigger than the Noranda one, plus it's next to The Galleria (the major shopping centre) and the markets and everything. so i asked and called the lady in-charge, and Ilhan will be starting his playgroup sessions next week.
the ultimate in homesickness: when Ilhan asked "Ana mana?" and "Surya mana?"
for the uninitiated, these 2 are characters (Ana being Tamara Blezinsky, Baba's favourite too. bapak dgn anak sama) in the long-running (and long-viewer-suffering) indonesian sinetron Hikmah which played on Suria for last year. and of which Ilhan can't help watching memandangkan the trailers run every 10 minutes. and of course, nenek and ibu got hooked on it towards the end, despite hair-pulling exasperation over "eeeee....bodohnya si Ana ni....kenapalah dia biarkan orang bully dia macam tuuuuu!!!"
ya...so...Ilhan even memorises the Hikmah theme song, which he asks me to sing over and over again with him. so we know he's truly homesick when he's done asking about family and starts asking about hikmah characters. he gets his dose of Hikmah over Youtube now. :)

Poor Ilhan.. I think you can try watch hikmah on astro ria every wed, thurs @ 10am (sg time) thru syoktv.net .. if you have luck connecting you might be able to watch the sinetron thru the super tiny screen.
ReplyDeleteHave fun at the playgroup, Ilhan!
Ilhan is joining a playgrp! It will be much much different then here in sg.
ReplyDeleteI was attached to one centre for a month, not so long ago.
The early childhood practices, the culture.... wwow, so fun!
Alamak, makes me wanna go back there again!
aiyoy.. is teaching that bad?
ReplyDeletehahah man degan anak sama, TV addict:P
ReplyDeleteeh, I just started on "The 10th Circle" ..*Intense*
& yah, everywhere you go, problems all the same. we all go through pain, joy, miss home, etc, in the "same language"
ohh Ilhan... YOU watch Sinetrons? You are so so so my menantu! Nanti Ilhan dah besar come to my house, I make cheesecake for you, we watch Sinetron together ok ? and yes, I love Tamara too.. she's so sweet! But Ilhan, I had a mega crush of that one.. yes the one with the name Ari Wibowo...
ReplyDeleteOn a different note, after reading the article on teaching, I guess yeah.. dimana-mana pon , the grouse about being an MOE teacher is the same. I had that disillusion with MOE-SG. But somehow, after about a month in QIDS, I'm loving it! Cake, kalau Sufian dah habis belajar and wants to work in KL, come and join us teaching in QIDS.. Ilhan can be in the QIDS preschool. AND yes, I am serious about this.
ReplyDeleteI dont think teaching the students is bad. Its everything else that comes along BESIDES the teaching that gets to teachers.
ReplyDeleteI think from what I've heard, Singaporean teachers are the highest paid/
alya! are you are fan too? you must be since you know the day and time? ahh...a kindred spirit! i tried tuing in to syoktv the other day to catch Juara Lagu on TV3 and it said starting from somewhere in february it'll be a paid service? oh dear...but i might just consider if this tennis-cricket-footy staple in Oz tv goes on!
ReplyDeleteOMG the tenth circle ahh.. the ending is unexpected lah! anyway, theres a quote/puzzle hidden in the comic pieces in the book. i have troubles finding it out. can you tell me if you ever find out what it is?
ReplyDeleteyou were here murfee? early childhood and childcare services is such big business here. i'm even considering taking a beginner's cert in this field to get a part-time job here.
ReplyDeletenadia, i'll leave that for you to discover :)
ReplyDeletesalma, i'm just waiiiitiiiiinnngg for the new season of Grey's Anatomy to start. and they just started the season premiere of Heroes here...really good, it's something like X-Men minus the 'looks'.
ReplyDeletei couldnt find it either nad...did u try the jodi picoult website?
ReplyDeletehee hee hee....i can't wait to meet you tante lina. both of us can then sing sinetron theme songs over and over again like record rosak. and ari wibowo...i think ibu went thru that 'Dia' phase too remember...haha
ReplyDeleteaunty khalidah .. i haven't got the chance to watch hikmah or any other malay shows but mamma been memorizing the programme schedule hoping to catch the sinetron one day . ohh got to pay huh and i guess we've missed the registration period too ..
ReplyDeleteI really envy you having a long break from work... right now I don't have that option and can only wander when will my turn be. It's getting worse in Singapore.. the more years you are in it, the more work they will pile on to you. If you say no, they'll say you are incompetent...*sigh*.. anyway enjoy while you can, especially the precious time with ilhan right now, it will never come back
ReplyDeleteoh dear...sounds awful. hope you try to snatch moments of respite here and there. try not to let it get to you too much. as for spending time with ilhan, it's amazing how he seems to learn something new each day. and me too in the process :)
ReplyDeleteYeaaaaah... Ilhan, the DIA phrase I was sleeping dreaming of Ari... muahaha.. Nanti Ilhan dah besar mesti hensem macam Ari. AND go tell uncle Nauruz you got better things to do then go around the neighbourhood with a grimy basket yelling '.. Onnndookkk onnndokkkk... goreng pisaaaang..'
ReplyDeleteAda ke muka hensem macam Ilhan dia suruh jual epok epok? So tidakkkk!
